How to Remove a Background From a Photo

CutMyBG

Photos have soft edges and real lighting. A background remover can clear the scene, but the quality of the cutout depends on how clearly the subject stands apart from what is behind it.

Pick a photo with a readable subject

A person or product in front of a plain wall, sky, or studio background is easier than the same subject in a cluttered room. If you can reshoot or crop so the subject fills more of the frame, do that first. The tool still accepts the cluttered photo. The outline is just more likely to need a look.

Watch hair, glasses, and shadows

  • Hair and fur can be partly removed or left with a fringe of the old background.
  • Glasses may keep a patch of the scene inside the lens. That can be correct, because the lens really does show the background.
  • A shadow on the floor is often treated as background. If you needed the shadow for a product shot, the cutout will look like it is floating.

Group photos and motion

Two people standing apart may both be kept, or the model may prefer the clearer figure. Motion blur smears the edge, so the cutout follows the smear. A sharper frame is a better source than a blurred one.

Product-specific framing is covered in removing a background from a product photo. Phone camera-roll steps are in the phone guide.
